Texas Physician Sentenced in Healthcare Fraud Scheme
- by Sean Weiss, Partner & VP of Compliance
Here is a case that is absolutely maddening. In my humble opinion, the 84 months the provider received as a sentence is well deserved. To conceal his criminal activity, the doctor forged patient records of military members and/or their family to create the false appearance that he had examined patients, then submitted fraudulent records to the Defense Health Agency in response to an audit.
According to information presented in court, beginning in January 2015, the provider participated in a health care fraud scheme by issuing prescriptions for specially compounded scar creams using the names, dates of birth, and Health Insurance Claim Numbers of TRICARE beneficiaries, and caused the prescriptions to be forwarded directly to Memorial Compounding Pharmacy in Houston, Texas. These prescriptions were issued without consultation with the patient and without the patient’s knowledge.
