If you’ve had issues with your small practice since the COVID-19 pandemic, you’re not alone. American Medical Association (AMA) data from 2018 found 47.4 percent of physicians were employed by hospitals or hospital-owned practices, and 45.9 percent were owners, leaving the additional 6.7 percent as independent contractors.
In early April, to provide guidance during the chaos, the AMA produced three employment articles for physicians, admittedly with a strong focus on the physician working for a hospital or health system. But, the AMA said, changes in clinical service demand would likely occur and subspecialty services would also likely be paused during the state of emergency, causing a lack of demand for certain services. As it turns out, these principles have applied to both large health systems and to smaller, independent practices.
