While Medicare has announced plans to launch PECOS 2.0, they have yet to announce an exact release date.  Those in the credentialing world recognize PECOS and Medicare’s Provider Enrollment Chain of Ownership System that is used for online Medicare applications/enrollments.  PECOS 2.0 updates boast several improvements that are aimed at streamlining the Medicare enrollment and revalidation application process.

Improvements Coming With PECOS 2.0

The touted improvements include:

1. One Application, Multiple Enrollments

You will be able to enroll in multiple states or update information across multiple enrollments, with a single application.  This will be an immense help to large groups and organizations.  This allows individuals to submit updates for multiple PTANs instead of going into multiple applications in order to update items like ownership and managing control information, billing address, and EFT information.  PECOS 2.0 will submit consolidated applications to each MAC at once rather than having to submit individual applications to each MAC.

2. Faster Application Time Using Pre-Existing Information

PECOS 2.0 will pre-populate your information, speeding up the application process.

3. Tailored Application Process

PECOS 2.0 will adapt based on your application type, only showing information that is relevant to you.

4. Ability to Manage Group Members More Efficiently

A simplified application will allow you to quickly add or remove individual providers from your group. You’ll also have the option to download the complete list of your group’s members for your records.

5. Quick and Easy Revalidation Process

PECOS 2.0 will remind you when it’s time to revalidate (renew your enrollment) and will guide you through the information you need to review and confirm.

6. Rapid Application Review

The smart error-checking features will help to ensure that the information you enter is accurate and will validate your information as you proceed through the application.  With PECOS 2.0, you will receive reminders so  you can be sure you are filing the correct documentation and you will no longer have to visit the revalidation center to check on status.

7. Real-Time Status Tracking

PECOS 2.0 will allow you to access the real-time status of all your submitted applications in one convenient view.  Currently, MAC enrollment departments have a different screen view, which can cause communication issues.

What Will Remain the Same With PECOS 2.0?

While there will be many changes in the new system release, some things will stay the same:

  • There will be no changes in MACs
  • Login information will remain the same
  • Connections will not change
  • All current PECOS enrollment records will be transferred into PECOS 2.0
  • You can still submit paper applications for Medicare enrollment, but it is highly encouraged to complete applications through PECOS.  Applications submitted through PECOS generally take less time to process.
  • Paper applications will be available to view in PECOS 2.0

Medicare will continue to add new information about PECOS 2.0 to their site and in upcoming MLN Matters, so if you haven’t already done so, sign up for the MLN Emails to receive announcements as the launch date approaches!  After the redesign of PECOS is made available, the extensive PECOS Knowledge Base will be available with searchable reference materials and how-to videos.  For questions on navigating PECOS or the processing of applications, please contact the EUS helpdesk or your Medicare Administrative Contractor.
